Thread (excerpts) 2008 (7 minutes) Ok, so this requires a little explaining. The video here is composed of excerpts from the first of two performances at Gallery 400 in Chicago that book-ended the installation I had there in April/May 2008. This piece was presented at the opening of the show and involved Noelle Mason, Ross Moreno and myself. In the video, Noelle and I read from a script, acting out (poorly) a conversation between two supposed lovers who are discussing a BIG EVENT that happened to them the night before. As you may or may not be able to gather from the dialogue, the guy and the girl are talking about two very different events though they believe they are talking about the same thing leading to a (certain) comical confusion. About 3/4 of the way through the dialogue, a set of furry hands emerge (Ross Moreno) from the giant paper bag behind the two lovers causing them to run around screaming, throwing lawn furniture and generally going ape-shit. This part should be fairly self-explanatory. Now, throughout all of this, we are asking members of the audience to help us document the piece with a still and video camera. After repeated requests only one audience member responded, a girl named Elizabeth (name changed to protect her identity). If you happen to watch the video in its entirety, which frankly would surprise me, you'll see that these cameras were destroyed at the end by being submerged in flowerpots filled with wet plaster in an effort to eradicate all documentation of the performance. I kind of felt bad about that since "Elizabeth" was actually really helpful. So what you're watching here is footage that was later found after the fact that had been secretly bootlegged. Its strange appearance is the result of a paper tube being taped on the lens to aid in the camera's concealment under a jacket and which makes it look like you're watching it from the wrong end of a fucking telescope which kind of makes sense since the piece is sort of about UFO's. Anyways, this other video here will probably help shed light on this whole deal... |
